Well we were waiting to report on the big news about legal sports betting in America until we were sure that it wasn’t going to be overturned, and it now looks like the new laws are here to stay. Every American from coast to coast can now bet on everything from professional football to college ice hockey, and the gambling public couldn’t be happier. Since the laws around betting online had become cloudy in recent years it’s nice to have a definitive answer on the subject from no less than the highest court in the land: the Supreme Court of the United States.
Those who have been following the situation closely will already know that the landmark decision came down on May 14th of this year, striking down federal regulation of internet gambling and leaving the legality of the matter up to individual states to decide on their own. The victory was driven by 6 patriots who voted to repeal the oppressive law, outnumbering the 3 Democratic justices who clearly hate personal freedom and liberty. The final decision was based on the 10th Amendment of the United States Constitution which states that the federal government only has jurisdiction over things that are clearly mentioned in the original Constitution. So because there is nothing regarding gambling in the historic document, it therefore falls under state law – SCOTUS got this one 100% correct.
The case was driven by Chris Christie and the state of New Jersey who brought the original case to the court a few years ago. Many experts across the country believed that the ruling was going to be challenged and eventually overturned, however, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen now. We are now only 2 weeks away from the kickoff of the 2018 National Football League season and many brick and mortar casinos have launched online platforms to allow residents of their respective states to gamble online, so it looks like everything is proceeding at full steam.
